‘Ha,ha,ha - cryptic puns – very funny …’

LESSON 13 in ‘How to solve cryptic crosswords’

Cryptic crossword compilers are not above using cryptic puns or plays on words to form an answer. They are playing with your mind, after all!

As you progress with your cryptic crosswords you’ll find that solving cryptic clues will often provide you with many humorous insights into language.

Often the word play will be derived from a literal reading of the clue words, for example spirited community may mean GHOST TOWN; blockbuster may be clued for SCULPTOR; and liver may be expected to mean BREATHER (i.e. one who lives and breaths).

While you can never rely on punctuation within clues, cryptic puns will usually be suggested by the inclusion of an exclamation mark (!).
